Road Safety and Transport
Safe School Travel
We encourage students to walk or ride to school and teach them essential road safety skills for their independence. Given busy school environments and distractions like music and phones, it's important all children and adults stay alert when walking and driving around our school streets.
At St Mary's, we use Queensland Government's Journi and SafeT resources to help students develop safe road habits. We focus on pedestrian safety, safe passenger behaviour in cars, proper bike riding with helmets, and safe movement in the community.
Ensuring safe travel to and from school is a priority. The Queensland Government supports this with targeted programs and resources.
Crossing Supervisors
Primary school crossing supervisors, employed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in Queensland, are responsible for supporting children to safely cross the road before and after school. Supervisors are expected to act in a positive, fair, and non-confrontational manner towards all members of the school community, displaying a responsible attitude, and respectful distance at all times.
Importantly, they must not unnecessarily delay children on their way to school or adults to their destination and are required to monitor and report any serious incidents that occur at school crossings to the school principal and their TMR manager.
It is important for parents to understand that crossing supervisors are there to ensure the safety of children and are not intended to form personal friendships with students. Supervisors are discouraged from engaging in intimate or personal conversations with children, as maintaining clear professional boundaries helps reduce risks such as grooming.
Should parents observe or become aware of any inappropriate conduct or concerning conversations with a crossing supervisor, they are encouraged to report these matters to the school principal and their TMR manager so they can be promptly addressed.
